Finding something to do in Ohio during the winter can be a bit challenging. You know what I’m talking about, right? Yeah, I thought so. That’s why I was so excited to learn about the Hocking Hills Comfort Food Cruise that is celebrating four years starting next weekend, January 14th.
For the past three years, I’ve thought about buying a ticket and then something always happened (like I forgot or I was sick) and I never had the opportunity to go. Well, this year that has changed. This weekend I’m getting a preview of the Comfort Food Cruise with a few other Ohio bloggers. Our trip promises to be pretty tasty. And I have an opportunity for you to experience it too, but before I share how you can win two tickets for the weekend of your choice, I’m going to give you a bit more information.
Hocking Hills in southeast Ohio is one of the state’s most visited destinations. If you’ve ever been here, you’ll understand why. The area is gorgeous no matter what time of the year you visit. Just look at the scenery.
Spring and summer are a great time to visit the area, but fall brings spectacular colors.
Winter is pretty fantastic too and I’m looking forward to taking a few quick hikes tomorrow to capture some of those winter scenes.
In an effort to highlight the talented chefs and amazing restaurants and food in the region, the Hocking Hills Comfort Cruise Tour was born. And it’s been a hit. Last year, the event which is held each weekend in January starting January 14th, sold over 600 tickets and drew people from all over the state.
The Comfort Cruise Tour leads visitors from one tasty stop to another across the region where they are able to sample that particular venues specialty dish. While many of the servings are sample size, this is Appalachian country so many of the servings are larger than the normal sample size.
Kevin and Julie Claus, owners of the Cedar Grove Retreat, look forward to the event each year. Their advice? Don’t try to eat everything in one day and spread out the stops over the course of the weekend. You’ll have plenty to eat both days. This year they are looking forward to welcoming friends and family to their large and comfortable Cedar Hill Lodge to gather after a tasty day exploring the area.
There are 13 stops along the Comfort Cruise Tour serving each stops specialty. Cuisine ranges from pizza and mac & cheese to cabbage soup and prime rib sliders. And if you’re worried about your waistline expanding, don’t. You can work off some of those calories with a hike on one of the popular trails in the area such as Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave, Rock House and Conkle’s Hollow, Cedar Falls and Cantwell Cliffs.
You can purchase your tickets in person at the Welcome Center or online at www.explorehockinghills.com. Tickets are $18 per person and are good either January 14th – 15th, January 21-22 or January 28-29. $5 from every ticket benefits local food banks.
Make sure to start your cruise at the Hocking Hill Regional Welcome Center. They will be serving coffee and mini cinnamon rolls from 8 a.m. until 12 noon. While you’re there, take time to step inside the world’s only Pencil Sharpener Museum and pick up your free Comfort Food Cruise souvenir — 13178 State Route 664 S, Logan; serving from 8 a.m. to noon.
